How much does it cost to assess and verify my artwork?
A consultant’s fee of $180 is charged for each assessment. With a positive assessment you will receive a signed COA, and an offer to have a Report compiled exploring your artwork. If your artwork isn’t appropriate for authentication you will be notified of the occurrence. Your assessment will be considered confidential, however if you need further assistance; just ask.
Why is it a good idea to authenticate my Morrisseau art?
Morrisseau’s art had been widely forged. This led to the Art Dealers Association of Canada (ADAC) forbidding its member galleries and appraisers from authenticating his work. Though the stream of forgeries has now been stemmed, many collectors own Morrisseau artwork which may or may not be legitimate. Without proof of authenticity work is difficult to sell and/or insure. Authentication is an investment in your artistic real estate that will only increase its value. There is no down side.
How long does an artwork analysis take to complete, and how much is it?
Depending on the research required it could take days to weeks to complete an in-depth analysis of an artwork. Each study is $280, which includes an interpretive analysis of the artwork’s subject matter and symbolism, along with an account of its historical context within Morrisseau’s personal journey and body of work. Note: This service is available only for authenticated artwork.
What is the pedigree of Ritchie Sinclair as a Morrisseau expert?
Ritchie Sinclair apprenticed with Norval Morrisseau. Beginning in 1979, they painted side-by-side for years. The two artists remained close friends until Morrisseau’s passing in 2007. In 2008 Sinclair began publicly defending Morrisseau’s name and artwork. His studied expertise, his long artistic experience with Morrisseau as his chosen protégé, along with dozens of Court appearances in multiple lawsuits to protect his mentor’s legacy make him the expert that the other experts seek for guidance and confirmation.
Will my artwork need to be looked over in-person?
Not necessarily, however quality photos of the front and verso of your artwork(s) will be required along with any information you have available with regard to its resale history.
What if my Morrisseau art turns out to be fake?
Is it better to remain ignorant or know the truth? Not everyone wants to know. Norval Morrisseau was a grand shaman whose works are records imbued with spiritual energy. Morrisseau’s genuine works empower people and lift their spirits. Alternatively, much of the fake work may depress and disempower. If you question the authenticity of your Morrisseau work, there may be remedies. Ask questions.
When do I want my Morrisseau art appraised?
An appraisal is not an authentication. Appraisers legally assume that any given work they appraise is genuine, so they are easy to come by, yet essentially meaningless without authenticating documentation. Knowledgeable collectors realize authenticity is the key issue when it comes to buying and selling Morrisseau art so appraisers will take a Certificate of Authenticity into account when assessing value to the work.
